Parents Grandparents Sponsorship
The Parents Grandparents sponsorship class is a special immigration program in Canada that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency. It enables families to reunite and live together in Canada. Here are the important points to know about the parents sponsorship class:
- Eligibility: Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are at least 18 years old and meet certain income requirements can sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency in Canada.
- Sponsorship Requirements: Sponsors must demonstrate that the ability to financially support their sponsored parents or grandparents, ensuring they do not require social assistance from the government. Sponsors are responsible for providing financial support and meeting the basic needs of their sponsored family members for a specified period of time.
- Application Intake Process: The parents sponsorship class operates here 2 step process. Interested sponsors must first submit an online interest to sponsor form during the designated intake period. If selected, they will be invited to submit a complete sponsorship application.
- Income Requirements: Sponsors need to meet the minimum necessary income level to demonstrate their ability to support their parents or grandparents financially. The income requirements are based on the number of people being sponsored and the size of the sponsors family unit.
- Super Visa: In addition to the Parents Grandparents Sponsorship class, there is an alternative option called the Super Visa. The Super Visa is a multi-entry visitor visa that allows parents and/or grandparents to visit their family in Canada for up to two years at a time, unlike sponsorship, the supervisor does not lead to permanent residency.
- Processing Times: The process and times for Parent Grandparent Sponsorship applications may vary, and there may be significant waiting periods due to high demand. It is important to stay updated with the latest information and prepare for potential delays.
- Financial Responsibilities: Sponsors are financially responsible for their sponsor parents or grandparents for a specified. Typically 10 years. This includes providing for their basic needs, such as food, shelter, and health care, and ensuring they do not become a burden on social assistance programs.
The Parents Grandparents Sponsorship class offers an opportunity for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents, allowing them to live permanently in Canada. By meeting the eligibility requirements, fulfilling the financial obligations, and completing the necessary application process, families can be reunited and create lasting memories together in Canada.
If any of the following conditions apply to you, you may not be eligible to sponsor:
- If you receive social assistance for any reasons other than disability.
- If you have not to filled an undertaking, an immigration loan, a performance bond, for family support payments.
- If you have an undischarged bankrupt.
- If you have been convicted of a sexual offence, a violent criminal offence, an offence against a relative resulting in bodily harm, or have made an attempt or threat to commit such an offence (eligibility depends on factors like the nature of the offence, when it occurred, and whether a pardon was issued).
- If you are subject to a removal order.
- If you are currently detained in a penitentiary, jail, reformatory, or prison.
Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Timeline
Interest to Sponsor
- The Parents and Grandparents sponsorship pool typically opens once a year.
- If you are eligible to become a sponsor, you must submit the “Interest to Sponsor” form within the specified timeframe that the pool is open.
Lottery
- Once the pool closes, IRCC will review the submissions and remove duplicate entries.
- Potential sponsors will be randomly selected and invited to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents. IRCC will email the invitations and post the invitation status on their website.
- If you didn’t receive an invitation, you may consider applying for a Visitor Visa or Super Visa for multi-entry use.
Apply for PR
- If you are selected to apply, you must submit your sponsorship application, and your parents or grandparents must apply for permanent residency.
- The application must be submitted before the deadline specified in your invitation. There are no exceptions.
- Do not prepare your application unless you are invited to apply. If you apply without being invited, IRCC will return your application without processing it.
2024 Intake
- The recent Parents and Grandparents sponsorship pool opened May 21, 2024, and closed August 2, 2024. During this time IRCC randomly invited potential sponsors who had submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020, to apply for the 2024 intake. IRCC sent 35,700 invitations over the course of approximately 2 weeks, while their goal is to accept up to 20,500 complete applications.
Minimum Necessary Income
For Parent and Grandparents Sponsorship, the sponsor in Canada will only be eligible if they exceed the MNI for three consecutive taxation years (except in the province of Quebec). If they cannot meet the income requirements by themself, their spouse or common-law partner can co-sign their application to combine their incomes. This requirement ensures that sponsors who bring their parents and grandparents to Canada are ready for the financial responsibilities that often come with caring for elderly family members.
Sponsors under the 2024 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship must meet the minimum necessary income outlined in the chart below. (The figures below represent the MNI for individuals living in Canada outside the province of Quebec.)
